مع أنَّ حليبَ الأم هو الخيار الأفضل لتغذية الرَّضيع، إلاَّ أنَّ الأمَّ لا تتمكَّن من إرضاع طفلها في بعض الحالات. وفي هذه الحالات، يكون الحليبُ الصُّنعي خياراً مُمكناً. إنَّ الحليبَ الصُّنعي تقليدٌ لحليب الأم. وهو يحوي كلَّ ما يلزم الطفل من مواد مُغذِّية. لكنَّ هذا الحليبَ ليس مُطابقاً لحليب الأم مطابقةً تامة، رغم تشابههما. ومن المستَحسَن إعطاء الطفل حليباً صُنعيَّاً مُعزَّزاً بالحديد خلال سنته الأولى. لا يهضُم الجسمُ الحليبَ الصُّنعي بسهولة هضم حليب الأم. وهذا يعني أنَّ الطفلَ الذي يتناول الحليب الصُّنعي يحتاج إلى عدد أقل من الوجبات. تُفضِّل الأمَّهات أحياناً إرضاعَ الطفل باستخدام زُجاجَة الإرضاع، لأنَّ هذا يُتيح لهنَّ حريةً أكبر. وهي تستطيع أن تملأ الزُّجاجة بحليب استخرجته من ثديها، وقامت بحفظه، أو بالحليب الصُّنعي. إنَّ استخدامَ زُجاجة الإرضاع يجعل إطعامَ الطفل في الأماكن العامَّة سهلاً. كما أنَّ هذا يسمح بأن يقومَ بقية أفراد الأسرة بإطعامه. لكنَّ استخدامَ الزُّجاجة يستوجب قدراً كبيراً من التنظيم فيما يتعلَّق بتنظيف الزجاجة وإعداد وجبات الحليب الصُّنعي. بالمقارنة مع الإرضاع الوالِديِّ، يتَّضح أنَّ استخدامَ زجاجة الإرضاع يُسَهِّل أيضاً معرفة مقدار ما تناوله الطفل من الحليب. وهذا ما يسمح للأم بمعرفة إن كان طفلها يحصل على كفايته من الطعام. قد يكون الإرضاعُ الصُّنعي مُكلفاً بالمقارنة مع الإرضاع الطبيعي، لأنَّ الأهلَ يدفعون ثمن زُجاجات الإرضاع وثمن المواد المستخدمة في تنظيفها. كما أنَّ الأمَّ التي تختار تغذية طفلها بالحليب الصُّنعي بدلاً من حليبها الذي تحفظه بعدَ استخراجه من ثديها تكون مضطرَّةً إلى دفع ثمن ذلك الحليب أيضاً.
