قبلَ بلوغ الطفل سنتَه الأولى، يكون مُعظم غِذائه آتياً من الحليب. لكن من الضروري أن يبدأ الأهل بإدخال أطعمة جديدة على نحوٍ تدريجي بين الشهر الرابع و السادس. يجب الحرصُ على استشارة الطبيب أو اختصاصي الرعاية الصحِّية قبل إعطاء الطفل أي نوع جديد من الأطعمة، لأنَّه يستطيع تقديم مقتَرحات فيما يخصُّ النظامَ الغذائي المناسب للطفل، ويستطيع التعامل مع أي قلق أو استفسارٍ لدى الأهل بشأن إعطاء الطفل أطعمةً صُلبة. يكون مسحوقُ الأرز المُعزَّز بالحديد أوَّل ما يُعطى للطفل من الأطعمة الصُّلبة عادةً، وهو طعامٌ خاصُّ بالأطفال الرُّضع. و يجري مزج هذا الأرز عادةً مع الحليب الصُّنعي أو مع حليب الأم. يجب جعلُ الطفل يشم رائحةَ الطعام ويتذوَّقه أوَّلاً. وإذا رفض الطعام المُقدَّم له، فمن الأفضل الانتظار عدة أيام قبل المحاولة من جديد. يجب الاستمرارُ في إعطاء الطفل الكمية المُعتادة من الحليب في أثناء تعَلُّمه تناول الأطعمة الصُلبة. يُمكن إعطاءُ الطفل شيئاً من الفاكهة أو الخُضار بعد أن يعتاد تناول مسحوق الأرز. لكن يجب الحرصُ على هَرس هذه الأطعمة جيِّداً. إذا لم يُحب الطفل طعاماً من الأطعمة الجديدة، فلا يجوز أن يتخلى الأهل عن المُحاولة سريعاً، لأن من الممكن أن يحتاج طفلهم إلى عدة أيام ريثما يتَقَبَّل تجربة طعام جديد. يجب البدءُ بمُكوِّن غذائي واحد فقط، كأن يُعطى الطفل مثلاً عصير التُّفاح في البداية بدلاً من هَريس التُّفاح والدُّراق معاً. ومن الممكن أن يجري إدخالُ الأطعمة الممزوجة بعد أن يعتاد الطفل تناولَ أنواع منفردة من الأطعمة. يجب إدخالُ الأطعمة الجديدة على نحوٍ تدريجي واحِداً بعد الآخر. كما يجب الانتظارُ عدداً من الأيام قبل تجربة أي طعامٍ جديد. وهذا يسمح أيضاً بمراقبة وتمييز أيَّة حالة من حالات التحسُّس الغِذائي. يجب إعطاءُ الأطعمة الجديدة بكميّات صغيرة، فمن المرجَّح أن يتقبَّل الطفل تجربة الأطعمة الجديدة عليه إذا أُعطيت بكمِّيات صغيرة. يُمكن أن ينتظر الأهلُ عدَّةَ أيَّام قبل إعادة محاولة إعطاء الطفل طعاماً كان قد رفضه في المُحاولة الأولى، حيث يكون الطفل مِزاجيَّاً، ومن الممكن أن يُحب الطعام بعد رفضه في المرة الأولى. وقد يحب الطفل أحد الأطعمة فترةً من الزمن، ثم يرفضه بعد ذلك. يُمكن البدءُ بإعطاء العَصير عندما يبلغ الطفل شهره السادس تقريباً. ويكون ذلك التوقيت مناسباً لبدء استخدام الكوب الخاص بالأطفال. لكن يجب الحرص على إعطاء الطفل عصائر من غير أيَّة إضافات، وعدم تجاوز كمِّية 100 غرام يومياً. يمكن إعداد العصير في المنزل بدلاً من شِرائه جاهزاً. لكن من الضروري عدم تجاوز كمية 100 غرام في اليوم الواحد، لأنَّ الإفراط في تناول العصير يُمكن أن يُؤدِّي إلى نَخر الأسنان والسِّمنة وإلى سوء التغذية أيضاً.
