هناك بعض المفاهيم الأساسية والتي لا بد من أي مهتم بمجال التسويق أن يعرفها. إن التسويق لا يعني أشياء كثيرة :
التسويق لا يعني الإعلان : يقول فيليب كوتلر في كتابه (كوتلر يتحدث عن التسويق) "من أكثر أنواع البلبلة شيوعا هي النظرة إلى التسويق والبيع على أنهما شيء واحد ،وليس هذه نظرة الكثيرين من عامة الناس بل نظرة العديد من رجال الأعمال، حيث إن البيع جزء من التسويق غير أن التسويق يشمل أشياء أكثر من البيع" (البيع هو القشرة الخارجية للتسويق).
التسويق لا يعني البريد المباشر: بعض الشركات تظن أنها تستطيع الحصول على الحجم الذي تحتاجه من التجارة بالبريد المباشر، ولعل شركات الطلبيات البريدية محقة في ذلك، ولكن معظم الشركات تحتاج إلى وفرة من أسلحة التسويق الأخرى لدعم البريد المباشر ولإنجاح البريد المباشر.
التسويق لا يعني المنشورات الدعائية: تتسابق معظم الشركات لإنتاج منشور دعائي عن المنافع التي يوفرونها، ثم يثنون على أنفسهم لإبداع منشور عالي الجودة.
التسويق ليست بصناعة ترفيهية: المسوقون لا يعملون في صناعة الترفيه، أي أن التسويق ليس مقصودا ً به الترفيه.
التسويق ليس مسرحا ً للفكاهة: إذا كنت تستخدم الفكاهة في عمليتك التسويقية، فإن الناس سيتذكرون فكاهتك المرحة دون عرضك الجذاب. وإذا كنت تستخدم الفكاهة ،فإن حملتك ستكون ممتعة في مرة الأولى وربما في مرة الثانية. وبعد ذلك ستكون فكاهتك مزعجة.
التسويق لا يصنع المعجزات: الكثير من الأموال تم تبديدها لان المسوقون كانوا يتوقعون حدوث معجزات وليس بسبب أي مفهوم خاطئ آخر.توقع المعجزات وستصيبك القرح.إن التسويق يعتبر أفضل استثمار في العالم إذا قمت به على النحو الصحيح، وأداؤه على النحو الصحيح يتطلب تخطيطا ً وصبر
