هذه الصورة التي قد تشعرون أنها مجرد رسمة بريشة فنان هي في الواقع صورة حقيقية لظاهرة طبيعية ساحرة اسمها “الشفق القطبي” أو “الأضواء الشمالية”.

الشفق القطبي هو ظاهرة ضوئية طبيعية تحدث في سماء المناطق القطبية، وهي ظاهرة سحرت الإنسان منذ زمن بعيد لدرجة أنها رُبطت بالأساطير وعالم الجن والأرواح أو حتى الآلهة عند بعض المُعتقدات.
وظلت ظاهرة الشفق القطبي لغزاً يحير العلماء لفترة طويلة حتى استطاعت ناسا حل هذا اللغز باستخدام خمسة أقمار صناعية ليكتشفوا أن السبب هو الآتي:

تقوم الشمس بإطلاق جزيئات عالية الطاقة تسمى أيونات، هذه الأيونات تسبح في الفضاء بسرعة كبيرة (تصل لما بين 300 و800 كيلومتر) لتشكل ما يعرف باسم الرياح الشمسية، وتعبر هذه الرياح القاتلة الفضاء مسرعةً لتضرب الأرض!

وعلى الرغم من أن هذه الرياح خطيرة جداً، إلا أن من بديع صنع الخالق -سبحانه وتعالى- أن جعل لكوكب الأرض مجالاً مغناطيسياً يحيط بها من كل الجوانب كدرع يحميها! وحين تصطدم الرياح الشمسية بهذا الدرع المغناطيسي تتشتت وينعكس جزء منها في الفضاء، بينما يُحبس جزء منها داخل خطوط هذا المجال المغناطيسي ليسير داخله حتى ينزل إلى طبقة الأيونوسفير. وأخيراً حين تصطدم هذه الجزيئات بالغازات الموجودة في طبقة الأيونوسفير تتوهج مسببة هذه العروض الضوئية المبهرة!

تخيلوا أن كل هذا الجمال ناتج عن رياح شمسية لو وصلت إلينا ستقتلنا!!
لا نستغرب أن يقسم بها الله -سبحانه وتعالى- في قرآنه الكريم بقوله: (فَلا أُقْسِمُ بِالشَّفَقِ * وَاللَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ * وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا اتَّسَقَ)[الانشقاق: 16-19]
