شجر المستكة شجر صغير ينمو بحوض البحر المتوسط .

و المصطكى عبارة عن فصوص راتنجية معروفة من قديم ، رغم أن الراتنج يبرز تلقائياً فإن الإفراز يزداد إذا ما أزيلت شرائح من اللحاء أو بعمل شقوق طويلة في جذع الشجرة و الأغصان الكبيرة للنبات فتسيل عصارته الراتنجية سائلة تجمد بسرعة و تبقى متعلقة بالشجرة على هيئة دموع هشة بيضاوية أو حبوب طويلة لونها أصفر في حين يتساقط الباقي على الارض .

يستخرج المصطكى ثلاث مرات في العام الواحد أي يعطي ثلاثة محاصيل : المحصول الاول يكون لونه ضارباً الى البياض وهو أطيب الانواع و اجودها . والمحصول الثاني يكون أصفر ناصعاً أما المحصول الأخير فيكون رمادياً .

و استعملت فصوص المصطكى في الطب الشعبي فكانت توصف لعلاج النزلات و الصداع بأنواعه و لقطع النزيف و علاج سوء الهضم و علاج الكبد و الطحال و إذا طبخت في الزيت و قطرت باردة في الأذن فتحت السدد و أزالت الصمم و استعملت لتقوية اللثة و الاسنان .

كما استعملت منذ فجر التاريخ في البخور و كانت في مقدمة التوابل .

وقال ابن سينا :
" إن شجرة المصطكا قابض و دهن شجرته ينفع من الجرب و يصب طبيخ ورقة وعصارته على القروح فتنبت اللحم فوقها وعلى العظام المكسورة فتجبرها . و مضغه يجلب البلغم من الرأس و ينقيه و كذلك المضمضة به تشد اللثة وهو يقوي المعدة و الكبد ويفتح الشهية للطعام و يطيب المعدة و يحرك الجشأ و يذيب البلغم و ينقع من أورام المعدة والكبد وفي نفس الوقت يقوي الكبد و الامعاء وينفع من أورامها . وطبح أصله و قشره وورقه ينفع من الديسونتارية و انجراد سطح الامعاء ومن نزف الرحم و نتوء المقعدة و يدر البول .

وقد استعمل الاتراك و اليونان و أهل الشام المصطكى بمضعها لإعطاء رائحة مستحبة للفم و كمضادات للتشنجات المعوية و تقوية اللثة و تحفظ بياض الاسنان و تزيد اللعاب و تقوي المعدة و تستعمل لعمل كمادات الآلام الروماتيزمية و آلام النقرس و آلام الأعصاب و تستعمل في التقلصات الصدرية .

تحتوي المصطكا على 2% زيت طيار ، 20% مواد راتنجية و حمض المصكنيك و مواد مرّة .

تستعمل فصوص المصطكى حالياً في مقدمة التوابل لتطييب أنواع كثيرة من الطعام مع الحب هال و البقدونس كما تستعمل في البخور و تستعمل في صناعة العطور و مستحضرات التجميل ومواد لص الأسنان و ملئها لإيقاف التسوس و النخر بها و تهدئة العصب و تعتبر المصطكى من أجود أنواع الراتنجات و أغلاها ثمناً .
