تفكرت في نفسي يوما تفكر محقق، فحاسبتها قبل أن تحاسب، ووزنتها قبل أن توزن، فرأيت اللطف الرباني فمنذ الطفولة وإلى الآن أرى لطفا بعد لطف، وسترا على قبيح، وعفوا عما يوجب عقوبة. وما أرى لذلك سكرا إلا باللسان. ولقد تفكرت في خطايا لو عوقبت ببعضها لهلكت سريعا. ولو كشف للناس بعضها لاستحييت. ولا يعتقد معتقد عند سماع هذا أنها من كبائر الذنوب، حتى يظن في ما يظن في الفساق.

بل هي ذنوب قبيحة في حق مثلي، ووقعت بتأويلات فاسدة. فصرت إذ دعوت أقول: اللهم بحمدك وسترك علي إغفر لي. ثم طالبت نفسي بالشكر على ذلك فما وجدته كما ينبغي. ثم أنا أتقاضى القدر مراداتي ولا أتقاضى نفسي بصبر على مكروه، ولا بشكر على نعمة. فأخذت أنوح على تقصيري في شكر المنعم، وكوني أتلذذ بإيراد العلم من غير تحقيق عمل به. وقد كنت أرجو مقامات الكبار، فذهب العمر وما حصل المقصود.

فوجدت أبا الوفاء بن عقيل قد ناح نحو ما تحت فأعجبتني نياحته، فكتبتها ههنا. قال لنفسه:
يا رعناء تقومين الألفاظ ليقال مناظر. وثمرة هذا أن يقال: يا مناظر. كما يقال للمصارع الفاره. ضيعت أعز الأشياء وأنفسها عند العقلاء، وهي أيام العمر حتى شاع لك بين من يموت غدا اسم مناظر. ثم ينسى الذاكر والمذكور إذا درست القلوب. هذا إن تأخر الأمر إلى موتك، بل ربما نشأ شاب أفره منك فموهوا له وصار الاسم له. والعقلاء عن الله تشاغلوا بما ـ إذا انطووا ـ نشرهم، وهو العمل بالعلم، والنظر الخالص لنفوسهم.

أف لنفسي وقد سطرت عدة مجلدات في فنون العلوم، وما عبق بها فضيلة. إن نوظرت شمخت، وإن نوصحت تعجرفت، وإن لاحت الدنيا طارت إليها طيران الرخم، وسقطت عليها الغراب على الجيف. فليتها أخذت أخذ المضطر من الميتة. توفر في المخالطة عيوبا تبلي ولا تحتشم نظر الحق إليها. وإن إنكسر لها غرض تضجرت، فإن أمدت لك بالنعم اشتغلت عن المنعم.

والله لأنادين على نفسي نداء المكشفين معائب الأعداء. ولأنوحن نوح الثاكلين للأبناء إذ لا نائح لي ينوح علي لهذه المصائب المتكومة، والخلال المغطاة التي قد سترها من خبرها، وغطاها من علمها. والله ما أجد لنفسي خلة أستحسن أن أقول متوسلا بها: اللهم اغفر لي كذا بكذا. والله ما ألتفت قط إلا وجدت منه سبحانه برا يكفيني، ووقاية تحميني، مع تسلط الأعداء. ولا عرضت حاجة فمددت يدي إلا قضاها. هذا فعله معي، وهو رب غني عني، وهذا فعلي وأنا عبد فقير إليه.
